Members of Congress Hit the Road Running

May 12, 2017

Many members of Congress will put the healthcare debate behind them, as well as some of their colleagues, as they lead teams in the annual ACLI Capital Challenge, a three-mile road race. They join participants from all branches of government and the media. Director Jeff Darman cautioned participants to run sensibly to avoid "hitting the wall" and making a political statement. The race takes place on Wednesday, May 17, at 8:00 a.m. in Washington, D.C.'s Anacostia Park. (Entries closed April 27.)

In the race will be several congressional committee chairs, agency heads, Admirals, Generals, and dozens of on-air correspondents, federal judges and print journalists.

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) will be back to try and defend his title as the fastest Member of Congress. He will be joined by 2016 Olympic Marathon Bronze medalist Galen Rupp, the 2017 celebrity runner (courtesy of John Hancock). A multiple American record holder and second place finisher at the 2017 Boston Marathon, Galen will serve as the official "whistle blower," starting the runners on their way. He will then jump in and run from the back of the pack.

Team captains in this event are not honorary positions. Each must finish the three-mile course for their team to score. This event shows that even the busiest people can take time out to stay physically fit. The ACLI Capital Challenge benefits the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. All entry fees and additional donations from the race sponsors will be used to provide a life-changing Fidelco Guide Dog and services to a blinded veteran or immediate family member.

"On behalf of the life insurance industry, we are proud to sponsor this special race that brings together individuals from across Washington to draw attention to a worthy cause. Not only are we dedicated to supporting the 75 million American families who rely on life insurers' products for financial security, we're honored to support this bipartisan competition," said Governor Dirk Kempthorne, president and CEO, American Council of Life Insurers.

The ACLI Capital Challenge annually settles the question of which branch of the federal government is the fittest. Or will the media end up on top? As usual there is spirited competition for the best and worst team name (James B. Kenin Award) honors. Some contenders include:

The Whipper Snappers

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)

Russian to the Finish Line

Representative Tom Graves (R-GA)

The riverfront course is out and back in Anacostia Park. Sponsors in addition to ACLI are Guardian, Hannover Re, John Hancock, MetLife, Nationwide, New York Life, One America, Prudential, Transamerica, USAA, Western and Southern Financial Group and media sponsor CQ Roll Call.

The race is offering bike parking from Two Wheel Valet as a free service. ACLI will be live tweeting: join the conversation by following @ACLINews and #CapChallenge.
